N. Koreans seem to dislike Chinese: British diplomat

A former British diplomat has said that North Korean residents seem to dislike the Chinese more than Americans.

“North Korean residents dislike the Chinese every much,” John Everard said at a party marking the publication of his new book, “Only Beautiful, Please,” at the Brookings Institution, an American nonprofit public policy organization based in Washington, D.C., Monday.

“I did not massage Chinese although I did it for German and Russian tourists,” a massage woman was quoted as saying. “They (Chinese) smell bad,” she said, as if looking down on them, according to Everard.

Everard viewed anti-Chinese attitude comes from their deeply-rooted independence spirit and intentional negligence of China which has been ahead of their country economically.

"North Korean citizens never tell of their hardship," the former British ambassador said, adding that they have great pride.

He added that North Koreans hate Americans less than the latter imagine, though there are some anti-American signs here and there. “Many of them don't feel threatened by the U.S. and there are not many residents who believe the Americans would attack them.”

The book contains what he experienced as the ambassador to the North from February 2006 to June 2008, during which North Korea’s first nuclear weapons test was done and the fifth and sixth denuclearization talks were held. At that time, Everard took pictures, while touring all of the North on a bicycle.

He gave a cool-headed assessment about the North Korean regime. "North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons program or exchange it for economic assistance, because they believe it's a weapon to protect themselves," he said. "Outside food aid could never lead North Korea to change as it has managed to keep its regime.”

Earlier, Peter Hughes, another former British ambassador to Pyongyang, who succeeded Everard, said, "There's no possibility that North Korea would give up its nuclear weapons program."

S.Korea, Japan to Sign Intelligence Protection Accord

South Korea and Japan have agreed to sign an accord on sharing military intelligence.

South Korea's Cabinet was the first to approve the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) with Japan in a closed-door meeting Tuesday. As soon as Japan concludes domestic procedures, the two sides will begin steps to sign the deal.

A South Korean official says the agreement covers ways of exchanging information and procedures on protecting and managing that information. It also allows sharing of intelligence on North Korea such as its nuclear and missile programs.

The official says Seoul currently has similar deals with 24 countries, including the U.S. and Russia. He also says a logistics support accord the two sides had also planned to pursue has been withheld in consideration of the anti-Japanese sentiment in Korea and other reasons.

Lee Hyori shoots sexy ad with top male model

Lee Hyori’s boyfriend Lee Sang-soon may be forgiven if he feels a tad uncomfortable looking at Lee Hyori’s latest pictorial for the July edition of men’s magazine L’Officiel Hommes.

In pictures released on June 19, Lee can be seen in various, seductive “artistic” poses with top male model Matthew Terry.
The two collaborated to promote Calvin Klein jeans and underwear and some of the shots are being declared by netizens as “too hot for those under 19.”

According to a representative from the magazine, the set was a very awkward one indeed as the two celebrities had to dive straight into sexual poses.
“Lee Hyori was the more initiative one, jumping right into it and breaking the ice,” said the representative, who also said in the end it was a great shoot, due to Lee’s efforts.

Lee is one of the nation’s top entertainers and is as comfortable singing on-stage as she is making the public laugh with her witty comments on variety shows.
Meanwhile, Terry is a relatively new face, but nevertheless a rising star, having made his debut earlier this year for Calvin Klein.
